Leadership Workshop - skills for future leaders

Leadership. We know what it looks like when it goes well (and when it doesn’t). We all have leaders we aspire to, and we think we know what makes a good leader. As we progress in our careers, we know it’s something we should embody ourselves.

But when and how does that transformation occur?
What can we do to get there?
And how do we ensure we become the great leaders we want to be?

ACEM’s Advancing Women in Emergency section is proud to deliver this workshop for all future leaders. You may have attended leadership workshops in the past- a how-to of CVs, courses, and finding your niche.

Instead, this workshop delves deeper into the avenues and obstacles of the leadership journey. We will focus on those unspoken barriers that often lie between our vision of a leader and the reality of getting there.

In this workshop you will learn about:

  1. Calming your Critic (and Embracing your Cheerleader) – The powerful inner narratives that can help or hinder us in our goals
  2. Overcoming Setbacks and learning to Bounce Forwards – Strategies to reframe and overcome failure
  3. Crossing the Intersection – The unique and additional challenges that come with an intersectional lens. How this is different for women, POC, LGBTQI+ etc and how to change your perspective to address this.

Quality and Patient Safety Special Interest Group - Quality care, better care and better Emergency care. A Pre-conference Workshop

Underpinning all that we do in whichever setting (well developed- Emergency Medicine (EM) founding IFEM nations) or emerging countries with respect to EM (such as India, Mexico, some member countries of the South American continent) one goes to work aiming to do the best for our patients and work as a collaborative team.

Our Special Interest Group represents more than 20 diverse nations with over 50 members all of whom have a focus on quality care for patients and delivery of that care in diverse settings. The revised IFEM Quality framework underpins this work and work has proceeded to develop and implement a toolkit which enables the fundamentals of emergency medicine to be incorporated Reflection on how we can improve one’s proactive, outcomes and receiving feedback (from peers, patients, supervisors, audit activities and case reviews, for example); collect data on key performance indicators/targets are all key elements which enable the striving for success and better care. Interaction and learning from others in differing settings and talking about challenges will enable a flowing discussion and networking measure that will improve understanding and enable others to benefit by this sharing of knowledge.

Focusing on quality of care activities, teaching and enhancing one’s skills and understanding will enable the work environment to foster better care and in turn create opportunities for a better world in Emergency Medicine settings Our speakers come from four continents and will outline various aspects of quality and patient safety including quality metrics, registries, guidelines for emergency departments including the IFEM quality framework and Utstein Guidelines the implementation of toolkits for quality improvement and review and analysis of morbidity/mortality from a safety perspective.
